As their name suggests, jerkbaits are fished using a series of quick jerks with the rod to mimic the erratic movement of a fleeing bait fish. This darting, side-to-side action is what triggers fish to bite!

 When To Fish Jerkbaits

Jerkbaits are popular in cold water but did you know you can fish them all year round? Most fisherman will put the jerkbaits down after the water reaches 70 degrees, since bass will typically be deeper than the optimal range for a jerkbait. When bass get that deep and bury in the weeds there are better tools like carolina rigs and heavy jigs that will produce fish. During this time jerkbaits work well on shallow flats early in the morning or just before the sun sets when bass are feeding. A great rule of thumb is work the jerkbaits slower in colder water and faster as the water warms up.

Very Aggressive Strikes

Jerkbaits have a very erratic action that when twitched properly, delivers very aggressive strikes! The darting action that jerkbaits have replicates an injured or fleeing baitfish that literally forces fish to strike. This is a very popular "power fishing" lure, where you basically fish it fast, cover a lot of water and seek out the active fish! What makes it even more unique is that you can slow it down and finesse fish it when times get tough.

FishinGurus.com has a wide selection of jerkbaits available in store and online. If you have any questions on choosing the right lure for your situation, you can ask for guidance in store, email us or check out our online forum where you can get information and tips from other fishermen.
